The native Japanese word “MONO-DUKURI” and sensibility of Japanese people, “qualia”
We always use unconsciously the word MONO-DUKURI. Do you know where the word comes from. The word ものづくり（MONO-DUKURI） is not written in Kanji here but in Hiragana as phonogram, because the word “MONO-DUKURI” has been used simply in spoken language since ancient times before the introduction of Kanji from China to Japan.
DUKURI is the noun pattern of TUKURU (verb pattern, means “create”). TUKURU implies “making new one (RU) by adding on something (TUKU).
Watching a Yamato Kotoba (Japanese traditional word written in Hiragana) directly leads to realization in Japanese people; Yamato Kotoba involves the sensibility of Japenese people. Thus ものづくりmeans “creating one art by adding on materials one after another”. ものづくりis the word visualizing this creating process.
Sensibility of Japanese people, “qualia” exsists in handcrafts.
Sensibility of Japanese people : Japanese sensibility has been handed down for a long time through feeling the four seasons and the climate in Japan.
Experiences from childhood unconsciously spread to the whole body of people, resulting in common sense of beauty in Japanese people.
Although the convenient and fast-paced life in the information society may damage the Japanese sensibility, we can remember the sense of beauty incorporated in our DNA by appreciating Japanese handcrafts.
Through this process, Japanese people may forge each identity further, enabling approach to deep inside of each.
Gloomy feeling with the moon
Bright and brilliant feeling with cherry blossom
Fresh verdure expressing life emergence
Best time of colored leaves indicating desolateness
Visible existence brings invisible something to mind, and then evokes calm praying of us.
Soulful handcrafts that were created spending enough time and effort evoke some nostalgia and sadness.
Thus, Japanese people can feel “qualia” (individual instances of subjective and conscious experience) in handcrafts, and this ability influences source of handcrafts.
In other words, genuine qualia of craftsman can be sensed only by genuine qualia of viewers. What is tested may be not craftsman but viewers.
“Handwork”, being based on qualia, is created with natural materials by his hand literally; it is delicate and noble work.
